Amharic is a Semitic language with a very long history and is the official language of several of the states within Ethiopia, including the Amhara Region and the multi-ethnic Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region. It has been the working language of government, the military, and of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church throughout medieval and modern times. Amharic is the language of some 2.7 million emigrants (notably in Egypt, Israel, and Sweden). It is one of two official languages of Ethiopia, along with Oromo.

Amharic is written with a version of the Ge’ez script known as ፊደል (Fidel). There is no standard way to transliterating Amharic into the Latin alphabet. Amharic is named after the district of Amhara, which is thought to be the historic centre of the language.
