It is very closely related to Bosnian and Serbian, languages of the former Yugoslavian Republic and all three languages are mutually intelligible. Croatian is written a variation of the Latin alphabet.Vernacular texts in the first appeared in the 13th century.  Standardization of the language began in the first half of the 17th century. The modern Neo-Shtokavian standard that appeared in the mid 18th century was the first unified Croatian literary language.
