Danish is a North Germanic language which was the official language of Norway until about 1830 and of Iceland until 1944. Danish is now the first foreign language learnt in Iceland. Danish has been one of the languages of the European Parliament since 1973, when Denmark joined the European Union. Written Danish and Norwegian Bokmål are very similar and speakers of Norwegian generally understand both Danish and Swedish far better than Swedes or Danes understand each other.
