Greek is a member of the Indo-European family of languages. Native to the southern Balkans, it has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. The Greek alphabet has been used to write the language for most of its history and has formed the basis of most European scripts including Latin and Cyrillic. The New Testament was written in Greek and the language was the lingua franca for the classical world and, later, of the Byzantine Empire. english has a huge number of words in its lexicon derived from Greek, especially in science, philosopy and medicine.
