When translating English documents intended for print or websites, most of the time we are dealing with text expansion which may cause problems with the document’s layout. With Chinese and Japanese typesetting the problem is the opposite. The nature of Japanese and Chinese characters means that the text shrinks in volume and can leave the page looking ‘empty’. Because of our background in design and print at Adelphi Translations we have the ability to work with the designers of the original English to adapt the Chinese or Japanese layout to achieve the best result.
Japanese word order is classified as Subject- Object-Verb. However, unlike many Indo-European languages, the only strict rule of word order is that the verb must be placed at the end of a sentence. Japanese nouns have no grammatical number, gender or article aspect. Many native Japanese words have become commonplace in English, due to the popularity of many Japanese cultural exports such as futon,haiku, judo, kamikaze, karaoke, karate, ninja, origami, rickshaw, sushi, tsunami. English words are often imported into Japanese but the pronunciation is forced to fit into the typical ‘consonant+vowel’ syllabary of Japanese. For example, ice-cream becomes ai-su-ku-re-mu.
