Sample of Korean
In 1446 a national writing system was commissioned by Sejong the Great to replace the Chinese system which had been in use up to that date. This is the writing system now known as called Hangul. The Koreans borrowed a huge number of Chinese words, gave Korean readings or meanings to some of the Chinese characters and also invented about 150 new characters, most of which are rare or used mainly for personal or place names. A number of Chinese characters are still taught in South Korea but the Chinese system was abolished in North Korea.
Because of the prevalence of English in modern Korean culture and society, it is not rare to find instances where one would mix both English and Korean in the same sentence. The vocabulary of the Korean language is roughly 5% loanwords; therefore, people often use English words and end up switching between the two languages without even realizing it. This is referred to as “Konglish”.
