Sorani is one of the two main dialects of Kurdish, the other being Kurmanji. Kurdish Sorani is written with a modified Persian alphabet. This is in contrast to Kurmanji which is spoken mainly in Turkey and is usually written in the Latin alphabet.
Sorani was named by linguists after the former principality of Soran. Objections have been raised to the name on the grounds that the name of one dialect, Sorani, spoken in the region Soran should not be extended to cover a group of dialect
