Malayalam Language information
Malayalam is a Dravidian language, one of the four spoken in the south west of India. Malayalam is used mainly in Kerala, the Laccadive Islands and neighboring states, and also in Bahrain, Fiji, Israel, Malaysia, Qatar, Singapore, UAE and the UK.
Malayalam language script consists of 53 letters including 16 vowels and 37 consonants. The earlier style of writing was replaced with a new style alphabet in 1981. This new script reduces the number of letters from 900 to fewer than 90 and was created to facilitate the typing of Malayalam using modern computer keyboards and typewriters.
