Pashto was made the national language of Afghanistan by royal decree in 1936. Today both Dari and Pashto are official languages in that country.  The Pashto spelling system has been revised since that period. The language has two main dialects: a softer dialect spoken in the south, and a harder dialect in the north.

Pashto is written with a version of the Arabic script consisting of an alphabet of 45 letters plus 4 diacritic marks. Pashto first appeared in writing during the 16th century in the form of an account of Shekh Mali’s conquest of Swat. It There are two standard written forms. One is based on the dialect of Kandahar, the other on the dialect of Peshawar.
