Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by inhabitants of the historical Punjab region of north western India and in Pakistan. The word Punjab means “the land of five rivers”.There are many dialects of Punjabi but the Majhi dialect is considered the most prestigious. Punjabi is unique among Indo-European languages as it is a tonal language, like Chinese or Thai.
In India, Punjabi is one of the 22 languages with official status in India and is spoken as a native language by over 2.85% of Indians. It is the first official language of Punjab (India) and Union Territory State Chandigarh and the 2nd official language of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. In Pakistan, Punjabi is the most spoken language and is the provincial language of Punjab (Pakistan) the second largest and the most populous province of Pakistan.
The Gurmukhi alphabet, created during the 16th century, is the most used writing system for Punjabi but it is also written using the Shahmukhi and Devanagari scripts.
