The country now known as Romania was originally home to  an Indo-European people, the Dacians. Dacia was colonised by the Romans in 106, and part of Dacia  became a Roman province. This province, which was rich in ores, especially silver and gold, was colonized by the Romans, who brought with them Vulgar Latin as the language of administration and commerce which gave birth to the proto-Romanian language. Romanian has preserved a part of the Latin declension, but whereas Latin had six cases, Romanian has only three. Romanian also vastly simplified the Latin system of verb tenses.

Although the language spoken in Moldova is usually designated “Moldovan” it is considered to be almost identical to Romanian. It is also taught in Ukraine, Serbia, Bulgaria and Hungary. The lexical similarity with Italian is estimated at 77% and the vocabulary has been strongly influenced by French, Italian and other international languages.

The oldest written example of Romanian is a letter dating from 1521 and was written using the Cyrillic alphabet. The earliest wriiten example in Latin script came later in 16th century. The Cyrillic alphabet remained in use until 1860, when Romanian writing was first officially regulated and the Latin script officially adopted.
