Russian is the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages, and the largest native language in Europe. Russian distinguishes between so-called soft and hardsounds and has usually no diactritic to indicate word stress. Russian humour gains much of its wit from the great flexibility and richness of the Russian language, allowing for plays on words and unexpected associations.
Russian is written using a modified version of the Cyrillic (кириллица) alphabet consisting of 33 letters. Russian started appearing in writing during the reign of Peter the Great (1672-1725) who introduced a revised alphabet and encouraged authors to use a literary style closer to their spoken language. The dialect of Moscow was used as the basis for written Russian.
Russian translations are made using a CY font or Cyrillic such as Helvetica CY whereas Polish uses CE or Central European fonts such as Helvetica CE. Other languages including Turkish have their own classification of font, in this case it would be Helvetica Turkish that has to be used as only Turkish has an undotted i <ı> which is not in the fonts for CY or CE languages. Russian translations can be longer than the native English so when translating into Russian care must be given to allow for text expansion.
