Example of a book translated and typeset in Sinhala by Adelphi
Sinhala is written from left to right and the Sinhala alphabet is used only for this Indo-Aryan language and has been used since the 6th century BC. As with all Indo-Aryan languages the alphabet follows a sorting rule different from other Indo-European languages. There are a considerable numbers of Sinhala speakers in Singapore, Thailand, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Numbers are now usually written in the Western notation.
Sinhalese is spoken in the Southern province of Sri Lanka and uses several words that are not found elsewhere in the country; this is also the case for the Central part, north-central region and south eastern part. For native speakers all dialects are mutually intelligible, and they might not even realize that the differences are significant.
