Shift.ms is a social network for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who commissioned Adelphi to translate and subtitle a number of videos into French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
Adelphi was approached by the Royal Armouries to typeset in Arabic posters, brochures and exhibition materials. They provided their own Arabic translations, which we were happy to work with. As all the materials were bi-lingual with both English and Arabic on the same page or on opposing pages we had to make sure that the English text did not change from the original source.
We typeset the materials and provided PDF proofs for their in-country people to check. Once approved we provided Print ready PDF’s to print from, eliminating any font or application issues.
The project had a tight deadline, as they needed to print the materials and get them to Oman for a very important exhibition.
As well as UNICEF we also work with, Amnesty International, the United Nations, the Refugee Council & many others.
UNICEF was looking for a supplier who could provide translations and typesetting in Chinese, Arabic, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and Spanish, quickly.
Simple for Adelphi we do this kind of work every day. As well as UNICEF we have also worked for Amnesty International, the United Nations, the Refugee Council and many others.
Working for their design and product development department, we have translated and typeset a large variety of packaging, instructional and promotional materials for their international markets for products such as hair dryers, hair tongs and shiatsu massagers.
19 Target Languages including: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Hungarian and Polish.
Adelphi often work for advertising agencies and design agencies on behalf of their clients. Here are some examples of packaging projects we have worked on.
Packaging is one of the more technically difficult projects to do. These often require special colours, cutters and flaps and a knowledge of typesetting is essential. Our head of typesetting cut his teeth on packaging in the creative department of Nestlé©, working on a wide range of packaging for every kind of product.

Screen shot of IOC video
One of IOC’s agencies from USA approached us to carry out subtitling for an awareness video aimed at athletes to educate them about match fixing. We turned around the project in less than 48 hours.
Judging from client’s feedback, they were really pleased with the work we carried out for them.
Due to confidentiality reasons we are not allowed to show the actual video at this time
The client wanted to produce a video, which was aimed at refugee’s in the UK looking to find assistance to return to their respective counties. The information in the video needed to be delivered in multiple languages from an English script and also had to be accessible to the visually impaired and people with hearing disabilities (HoH). The final footage of the video hadn’t been compiled from the rush clips at the time of the request and the client wanted further advice on expansion of languages.
The requested languages were; Arabic, Bengali, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified), Dari, English, Farsi, French, Hindi, Kurdish, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish (Latin American), Tamil and Urdu.
As a number of the languages required tend to expand by 10%-20% when translating from English, we added potential timings to the English script provided and advised on how long the final sections would be to accommodate the other languages. The clients video producer implemented the lengths to the final video and provided a high res copy to work with. To ensure hard of hearing and visually impaired were both catered for, we recorded voice-overs and provided subtitling in the required languages. As with most voice-over projects, we provided a selection of voices for the client to choose from and where there wasn’t one suitable in our database of talents, we went about sampling others for the client’s further consideration. Once approved, we recorded the audio and synced it to the video against the agreed timings. After the voice-overs were added, the €˜burnt on’ subtitles were synced accordingly and the final products rendered in each of the languages. The files were delivered in Apple ProRes 422 720p and H.264 versions.
Adelphi were asked to visit Amnesty international at their head office in London to discuss how we could help them when their own in-house typesetting were overloaded. We were asked to typeset only eastern European languages. The first job they gave us was Kurdish Sorani a right to left language using an Arabic script.
Since then we have typeset the following languages for Amnesty — Albanian, Amharic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Bulgarian, Cambodian, Simplified Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Farsi, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Bahasa Indonesia, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Kurdish Sorani, Lithuanian, Malay, Mongolian, Nepali, Pashto, Polish, Romani, Romanian, Georgian, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Swahili, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Urdu.
We have worked with Amnesty International for over 4 years. Typesetting various printed materials in more than 50 languages. The projects we have carried out for them have ranged from 4 page covers to 100 page booklets.
All our typesetting is carried out in-house by our own typesetting & quality assurance team.
We were approached by an agency working for Barclays to subtitle a corporate video into Arabic to show case their Corporate Purpose and values. We were provided with a H.264 720p video, this project was a very tight deadline and needed to be turned around within 24 hours.
This work was carried out for Barclays via their agency Communisis. We eventually typeset 12 Welsh brochures. Typesetting Welsh has its own little problems as Welsh has some characters that are not standard and do not appear in English fonts, such as Å´.
We also typeset business cards for Barclays Bank into a variety of languages on a regular basis.
Subtitling in seven languages
We were asked by our client to produce a series of subtitled videos into seven languages, Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Turkish for their internal staff training & development. We would have to work to very tight deadlines of 5 working days or less to complete the projects, as they were to provide timely insights into new products and upcoming trends quickly and effectively to all customer-facing employees.
We produced the transcription of the source video in English to take the weight off of the customer, translated the script to the languages outlined by the client and applied subtitles to the source footage in keeping with the style of video finally delivery Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 720p with burnt on subs. Since the start of this ongoing project twelve months ago we have completed over 30 different videos including ones not originally outlined in the first brief.
Japanese subtitling for ABSOLUT ELYX
To produce Japanese subtitling for Pernod Ricard via their agency LTA, for their Absolut Elyx brand of vodka, to be burnt onto the videos. The turnaround time required was very tight since the video was being used in a presentation in Japan. We completed the project with time to spare.
The project was handled by our senior Japanese project manager who while liaising with the client also made sure that the Japanese was of the highest quality. The video was sent by hard disc DHL to ensure the video arrived the day before the client was flying to Japan.
