Japanese typesetting (DTP) services

Adelphi started out by specializing in Japanese typesetting 15 years ago but even before Adelphi was established their Managing Director lived in Japan for 10 years working at a publishing house in Tokyo. Since then Adelphi has translated and typeset over 120 different languages. Our in-house Japanese staff proofread all Japanese typeset work before approving it for sending to the client.

When commissioning Japanese typesetting and translation it is important to prepare a style sheet for words staying in English, otherwise they will be transliterated using Katakana, which is a separate Japanese alphabet used only for foreign words and names. E.g. Coffee is spelt コーヒー pronounced KOH-HE.

Translating and typesetting Japanese poses no technical problems as Japanese fonts are supported on both Macs and PCS, and by all professional typesetting applications.

Japanese Typesetting Things to Consider

Like Chinese, Japanese sentences do not have spaces between words, and words should not be cut at the wrong place. Another issue is that Japanese is a double bite language meaning that spaces between characters can vary, this is usually not a problem but it means that spaces before and after such things as commas, brackets etc look longer than normal and sometimes clients ask for these to be changed not understanding that this is the way it is supposed to be in written Japanese.

Japanese Voice-Overs and Japanese Subtitling

Music video subtitling

Adelphi Studio has recently produced music video subtitling in Japanese and Spanish for Van Halen. These were of a live performance of the song ‘She’s the Woman’ and a number of interviews.

Our subtitling and voice-over department, Adelphi Studio, is part of Adelphi Translations Ltd., a full-service translation agency producing not only Japanese translations and subtitles but also Japanese typesetting and Japanese voice-overs.

Adelphi is a Japanese subtitling agency that aims to provide a full video localization service to our customers.

Style of subtitles

There are various styles of Japanese subtitles that we can offer. Not just the style of Japanese font but also whether or not to use an opaque background behind the text or even a stylised background for dramatic effect or no background at all. We can advise you on the options available to suit your video and even produce samples for you to consider.

Localisation of on-screen text

Localising any on-screen text and motion graphics on your video into Japanese. Depending on the individual graphics and the source software used to create them we could require the original data package it was produced in.

SRT translation and transcription services

Using Adelphi’s English to Japanese translation services for subtitling, quality and timing can be closely controlled throughout the project, ensuring that your subtitles will always be ready to publish on or before your deadline. We also provide Japanese subtitling for many translation agencies around the world and are happy to work with their translations. As some languages must use specific fonts in order to work with the subtitling software, we can consult with you on your needs and advise you of all of your options. Adelphi is a proud member of the Association of Translation Companies (ATC).

Our in-house subtitle translations department are experts in English to Japanese translations and subtitle/SRT files created specifically for subtitling projects. SRT files are time-coded transcripts that can be imported into the subtitling software that then displays the correct subtitle in the correct sequence.

We also offer a transcription service for those customers lacking a transcript of their videos. We provide time-coded scripts of your videos that are ready to be translated. We will then use those translations for the subtitle text, sending you the files at each stage of the process for you to review and assess.

Japanese website translation

Japanese website translation: How much of your site should be translated into Japanese?

Depending on how you are marketing your product or service abroad, it may not make sense or be cost-effective to translate the entire site into Japanese. If there are regularly updated sections such as ‘News’ or maybe a blog, in which new content is frequently added, you may want to exclude this from the Japanese version of your website. You can create an effective series of ‘mini-sites’ in Japanese, which contains the main content of your site.

Japanese language information

Many languages expand when compared to English however Japanese on average tends to be shorter than English. Japanese uses “double-byte” characters: in terms of presentation, this means that punctuation marks like full-stops and commas have an extra, thin space coded right after them, e.g. 史上、重要。We are often asked to remove these by clients less familiar with Japanese, but this is both impossible and undesirable: these spaces are a natural part of digitally-presented Japanese.
